Purity of Heart, Soul and Mind

January 2010

Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

1. Purity starts in the heart

Purity is a quality of God and it is our basic quality, when we are aligned with God - when we are being our True Self. Purity starts in the heart, with the intention to follow the will of God, which is our Higher Will. Like the blessed Mother said when Archangel Gabriel announced that she would conceive the future Messiah:

Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. (Luke 1:38)

Purity implies unselfishness, loving our brothers and sisters, and willingness to serve a greater good. It also implies honesty - being willing to see where we may have impure motives, impure thoughts and deeds, and then to gradually purify ourselves from them.

The moment of coming back to God and saying "God, I've been impure, I've followed the ego and false desires. But now I am back and I am ready to walk the true path. Please guide me". This is the moment of baptism by water - the moment of repentance for our sins, of seeing all that is impure in us, and choosing a different course of action: I want Life, I want Purity, I want my True Self!

This decision starts in the heart, with a sincere remorse for the impurity that we lived so far, and with the decision that we wouldn't hide from God any more. Whatever weakness and imperfection surfaces, we are willing to face it and surrender it. Maybe it will take days, maybe months or even years, but we are willing, for we know it is not the part of who we are in God.

Jesus said "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." (Matthew 5:8). Purity of heart cannot be faked, and God cannot be mocked. The scribes and the Pharisees came to be baptized to the river Jordan but John the Baptist rebuked them, because he saw what was in their heart, he saw their dishonesty and pretence. They sought to appear pure and righteous but inside were full of darkness:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. (Matthew 23:27)

Pride is the opposite of humility. One cannot be pure if they are prideful, thinking they don't need God, or believing they know better than God. There are puritans, who practice outer purity, but what is in their hearts? Did they really give their lives in God's hands? Have they surrendered? Do they trust God? So many people try to control God, instead of allowing God to guide them.

So many people accepted an impure idea about God - an illusion - which they believe is true. Even atheists have their own idea about God, which allows them to totally disregard him. And this is impurity. A belief system that denies God, or sees God as an external figure, or claims we are sinners by birth and as such, inherently impure - all those beliefs are false beliefs that deny our true nature. They are impurities that affect the masses (or as some esoteric teachings call it, the "mass consciousness" which is a collective mind of all the people on earth) and need to be cleansed. But first, they need to be cleansed from our own minds, so that we may contribute to the greater whole pure thoughts.

On the other end of the spectrum is the belief - often heard in the New Age circles - that we don't need to be saved because no matter what we do, everything is fine and we are immortal. In other words, that we don't need to return to Purity which we left off as symbolized in the Garden of Eden (and in this life) but we can be saved regardless. Or that following some outer procedure or ritual, like chanting, meditation, proper lifestyle and diet - without surrendering impurities in our heart - will guarantee our salvation.

Nothing will do but complete surrender and saying what Mother Mary said, Lord, be it unto me according to thy word. Or as Jesus said in the Garden of Gethsemane,

Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. (Luke 22:42)

Surrendering the need to save even his physical life - knowing that he has eternal life in spirit.

2. Baptism by water

Baptism by water is the moment of our return to God and his guidance (Divine Direction), which we left off in the Garden of Eden. It is the coming home of the prodigal son. And the Father is happy, he welcomes him home with open arms and celebrates his return. There is no talk of punishment for the past sins! Punishment is the suffering we have to endure while being separated from the Father. When we return, that's when our real life begins, that's when we start Being. Before, it was just wandering in the desert, getting bruised in the school of hard knocks.

Once we return and kneel before God at the altar of our heart, the purification process starts. We might have impurities in all four lower bodies - identity, mental, emotional and physical, in form of false ideas, false (selfish) thoughts, negative emotions, lesser desires and various emotional attachments, as well as impurities/infirmities in our physical temple. However, if our heart is pure - because we know the truth of who we are in God - then all those impurities can be gradually dealt with. With God, all things are possible.

3. How to let go of impurities?

We are not required to be perfect before we face God. We are required to have a pure heart and willingness to surrender our attachments. And how do we do it? By loving God more than the things of this world. When we say "please God, take this false desire away from me, I don't need it any more". Or "take these thoughts away, I don't need them", or whatever attachment or impurity we are dealing with. But letting go of impurities can be tricky because we think we need them. For example, we think we need love from someone outside of ourselves (and God) and we daydream of a perfect partner and use our mental and emotional energy in those imaginations, and so we misqualify energy. Later we are disappointed because the person left us or is not interested in us, and we are caught in sorrow and disappointment. Once we are dreaming of pleasure - which makes us feel good, the other time wallowing in pain - which makes us feel bad. But both are misqualifications because both stem from our attachment to something of this world.

And because of the attachment to the pleasure part, it is difficult to give it up. The only way is to realize that it is a dualistic pleasure and always coupled with pain. And that it is not of God. And because we love God more, we decide that we don't need it any more, and we surrender it to God and ask God to take it away. If we ask from the bottom of our heart - if we really want to let go - it will happen and our attachment will be no more.

And what freedom it is! We don’t get caught in the same mental-emotional patterns and negative habits any more but are focused on God. And when the temptation comes, we can say "Get thee behind me, Satan". For we know it is a false choice, one that can only harm us and drag us into a bottomless pit. Unfortunately some people learn only from the school of hard knocks, where they follow their lesser desires and attachments until it causes severe problems in their lives, that can even manifest in form of physical disease. At that point the "pleasure" is completely gone and only the pain remains, and we realize there is really no benefit in keeping that habit. But it might cost us physical health, which after persistent misqualifications of God’s light through our mental, emotional vehicles as well, it will deteriorate.

Esoteric teachings say that we have four lower bodies, which are in our container of self, that help us express ourselves in the world. They are our higher identity that God gives us before we are born so we have a purpose in life; our mental body that allows us to think and process information and access the higher Mind of God; our emotional body, which processes our feelings and in its highest expression, is our vehicle to express love. And then there is our physical body, that is often greatly affected by the other bodies and how we think and feel.

So often we can make ourselves physically sick if we harbor great sorrow in our emotional body or angry thoughts in our mental body. So one part of cleansing and purifying ourselves is to purify our thoughts and feelings, and often our physical body will spontaneously heal itself. Although it is important to keep our bodies free of chemicals and poisonous substances like caffeine, nicotine and chocolate. Chocolate contain theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and can kill them. If we ate the same amount proportionately to our size, we too could be poisoned.

4. Impurity is misqualification of the Mother Light

What is Purity? In a physical sense, purity is the condition or quality of being pure; freedom from anything that debases, contaminates or pollutes. In an emotional and mental sense, purity is freedom from guilt, shame and evil tendencies. In a spiritual sense, purity is using the Spiritual Light (called in esoteric teachings the "Mother" Light because all of the physical plane is said to be the Mother, while the Father is said to be all of Spirit) in accordance with God’s Will, i.e. not for selfish purposes but for raising the All.

All negative habits and addictions are actually using the Mother Light for gratification of the lesser self – the "carnal" or lower human mind and the ego. Even if it is just thinking about some past event, where we feel someone has hurt us, we can misqualify the light in replaying in our mind what they said and why, and getting more and more angry or hurt, going into a downward spiral.

Similarly, we can misqualify energy when we imagine some negative future outcome, for example what might happen to us or our loved ones in a specific situations. Fear of the unknown and fear of loss, is what causes those thoughts and feelings, which can be very draining. And the basis and cause of the fear is usually a lack of Faith in a Divine Source of guidance and love. And so that too is a misqualification of energy. It is even black magic because we project negative thoughts into the universe, as if inviting trouble, instead of trusting that God is in control and that everything will be fine. This type of magic is invoked even if we have never consciously chosen to entertain any form of magic. When we wish someone dead, or ill or to have some form of misfortune or destruction, or we wish for ourselves personal gain without regard to harmful consequences to others, these are all created from a misuse of our will, not in alignment with the higher good for all or even the Will of God.

Condemnation, criticism and judgment is also a form of black magic because we are thinking about people, gossiping, dissecting their lives and actions, often projecting our own impurities unto them. It is an ill intent because it is not aimed at helping them but only in gratifying our own ego. In fact, for many people it is a way to escape from looking at the beam in their own eye and dealing with their own problems. It is easier is to focus on other people, because it leaves our ego untouched.

In fact, there are many forms of impurities, and they can be grouped according to the lines of the Cosmic Clock. The Cosmic Clock is a circular representation of twelve major God qualities, i.e. aspects of God consciousness.

Source: www.yourcosmicclock.com/clockmisuses.php

These are the perversions of the twelve God qualities, which are: (12) God-Power, (1) God-Love, (2) God-Mastery, (3) God-Control, (4) God-Obedience, (5) God-Wisdom, (6) God-Harmony, (7) God-Gratitude, (8) God-Justice, (9) God-Reality, (10) God-Vision and (11) God-Victory.

Mother Light can be misqualified on each of those rays, i.e. each God quality can be perverted by the ego and the carnal mind. And this then is impurity. The path of Being is the path of Purity – returning to our original purity and the original qualities that we were endowed with. That requires facing ourselves and recognizing the beam in our own eye, and then working on surrendering it. However, this also means that if we don’t have a particular beam – if we are pure on a particular ray – we can see other people’s beam and point it out. We don’t have to be pure on all twelve rays before we can notice someone else’s impurities.

The approach that many spiritual seekers apply today is that you cannot discern if something is right or wrong in God, because you are not pure yourself. And therefore you shouldn’t be telling people what to do, you shouldn’t be speaking out your truth because it is just your personal opinion and not an ultimate truth. When the reality is that we can discern if certain things are right in God or not, even if we are not completely ego-free in all areas. Even if we are not yet as Jesus Christ. Just take an example of a serial killer or rapist – most people would agree that what they do is against God’s law, and yet one doesn’t have to be a saint to conclude that.

Our Christ discernment will improve as we purify ourselves, and we will be able to discern even the subtle lies that some people are very good at propagating without being recognized. The most subtle lies are presented by the false teachers and false representatives of God, that Jesus called wolves in sheep’s clothing. They might say all the right words and do all the right things but their heart is not pure – because they haven’t surrendered to God. In their pride, they think they are better than God.

5. False purity of the false teachers

From spiritual pride stems the most subtle lies, most difficult to recognize. And why? Because spiritual pride is always covered up with false purity. Those people appear pure and holy, but often they are "holier than thou" – hypocrites. They may profess they love you and want only the best for you, but in fact they undermine you and your relationship with God. They will tell you – often in a convoluted language – that you are not good enough, or pure enough, to know God in your heart, and that they will show you the way. They are false teachers, false pastors, false initiators, self-appointed teachers of humankind whose aim is to destroy the Christ in their midst, just as they crucified Jesus 2000 years ago.

The scribes and the Pharisees pretended to be pure, and yet both Jesus and John the Baptist rebuked them. In this day and age we are supposed to recognize them and rebuke them as well. And for that, we need to be pure in heart, we need to be willing to surrender fully to God’s will, because only then we can recognize them. We need to be harmless as doves and wise as serpents – wise as themselves – to see through their lies and rebuke them.

False purity is pervasive today in spiritual movements. It masquerades as unconditional love, kindness and goodwill towards all people, but when it comes from the prideful ones, it cannot be pure, it cannot be of God. In this era of so-called democracy, our basic right to speak out the truth of Christ is taken away from us. We are required to be “politically correct” and promote equality and diversity, i.e. unconditional acceptance of everything, even that which is not of God. When we try to express our truth, we can even get sued.

This is what false purity does, this is what false unconditional love does to the Christ. It stifles and kills it. You are condemned for speaking the truth of God that you know in your heart. You are silenced for being the voice in the wilderness. But regardless of the resistance, be that Truth and be that voice - for this is what you are here for.

6. Surrender: Loving God more

Once we return to God and start walking with Him, we will turn to Him whenever we are faced with a challenge. Whenever we feel there is an attachment or impurity, we will pray and ask for it to be taken away. Each of us will have one issue that is the major stumbling block keeping us from Being the Christ. For some it will be fear of the unknown, for some self-condemnation, for some the need to be accepted by others. This could very well be the original reason of our fall, which we are faced with again and again over more lifetimes. And now is the time to deal with it - to decide to love God more and to simply let go and let God.

Surrender, decide and feel in your being that you don't need it - whatever is that outer thing you are looking for - because you have everything in God. Jump into the river and swim! And God and his angels will carry you.

When you do surrender, there is peace. And your motivation changes too - you are guided by higher desires, desires of your True Self, as opposed to various desires of the ego. And then you will know what to do and if something is good for you or not. You will simply know it in your heart, and there will be peace about it, because whatever happens, it cannot shake you from your foundation - because you are anchored in God. When you surrender all attachments to a certain outcome, and still something within is telling you to do it, then it is most likely God within telling you to do it. And thus, it is the right thing to do.

So with Purity comes Peace and Freedom. A deeper knowing that things will be fine. And freedom to follow the impulse from the heart, the still small voice which cannot be heard until we've eliminated the loud voice of the ego. But once we do it, we can really listen. And we will know, because there won't be any more a separation between us and God. I and my Father are one, and therefore my will is God's will.

7. Baptism by Fire

As we walk with God, surrendering more and more, our four lower bodies will become ever more purer. And we'll get to the point of being totally transparent, so that when the prince of this world comes, he has nothing in us.

And then we are ready for the baptism by Fire, also called Trial by Fire, when we can be washed by the Fire of the Holy Spirit without being consumed by it. Because the Fire of the Holy Spirit consumes all impurities, all that is unreal (not of God) in us. If there is nothing unreal in us, we become as Above so below - Spirit and Matter as One, union of Father-Mother God through us, Christ Son. And this is the goal of life: to Be the Christ on Earth, to be that union of Father and Mother, Alpha and Omega, Spirit and Matter.

That can be achieved only by walking the path of Purity and following Divine Direction. That is how God envisaged the process of growth for his children: that they start as babes in Christ - innocent and pure in heart, and then through expressing their True Self and multiplying their God-given talents, to become More, and through that, to grow in consciousness and understanding of life. However they left off that path - the Way of Being - lured by the Serpent, a false teacher who offered them the false more outside of God, and so they lost their way and their connection with God. They didn't trust that God would indeed provide everything for them, if they just stick to his guidance and the guidance of the teachers appointed by God.

The connection can only be re-established through Purity. We need to love God more than anything else, even our physical life. Therefore Jesus said that the greatest commandment of the Law is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. Because that means that we strive for purity in all our four lower bodies (our soul and mind) and we live for God only. When we live for God, we are Being our True Self and fulfilling our reason for being. We are also bringing the light of God into the material octave and raising the All. And so by Being, we are completing the vertical and horizontal figure-8 flow: the flow of light and love between us and God, and between us and other people. Thus, we are Being the Christ on Earth.
